Selection Criteria

Completion of the certificate foundation year (or equivalent psychoanalytic theory and self-development hours). Submission of an application form and individual interview. Application and interview fee of £50.00.

Course Aims

  • To equip trainees with the skills and techniques of the psychodynamic model.
  • To enable each trainee to work with clients towards the goals of psychodynamic counselling.
  • To inform trainees of the limits and the context of the psychodynamic approach.
  • To equip trainees to work as reflective practitioners and evaluate theoretical rationale within a pluralist culture.
  • To equip trainees to work with difference, within themselves and in the consulting room.

Course Content

  • Deeper knowledge, understanding and experience required to begin clinical practice.
  • Learning through lectures, set reading, discussion, role play and experiential work.
  • Four main modules: Practice and Technique, Developmental Psychology, Clinical Concepts and Psychopathology.
  • Completion of a case study before qualification.
  • Clinical practice with clients and supervision included within the training.
  • Trainees begin clinical work when ready, supported by tutors, therapist and supervisor.

  • Module 6: Clinical Seminars (continued)
  • Module 7: Assessment and Time-Limited Counselling
