Training Pathway

Training as a Psychodynamic Counsellor

Our Psychodynamic Counsellor training programme meets the SCOPED framework for core competencies in counselling & psychotherapy training agreed by the key partnership organisations in the UK known as the Partnership of Counselling and Psychotherapy Bodies (PCPB).* Learn more about the PCPB framework.

At Catalyst, we believe that learning to become a psychodynamic counsellor is a developmental process. Trainees need to learn fundamentals first, on which they can build more sophisticated skills.

Our training programme and structure conceptualises psychotherapeutic technique as based on common factors that all psychotherapeutic practices share and are correlated with good outcomes. These are core concepts and techniques, such as building a therapeutic alliance, listening empathically and setting the frame and boundaries, which need to be learned before more specific psychodynamic technique and understanding can be learnt and developed.

We also feel it is important for trainees to understand how and when to recommend different types of therapy in order to achieve the best outcomes for different types of clients or patients. Being able to understand the similarities and differences between counselling approaches is therefore also an important part of our training.
